The Challenge
The current quantum computing ecosystem is heavily fragmented. Developers face vendor lock-in with proprietary SDKs, lack hardware-agnostic runtimes, and struggle to integrate Quantum Processing Units (QPUs) with classical High-Performance Computing (HPC) without sacrificing data privacy and European data sovereignty.
The Solution
Q-VERSE is a 36-month Horizon Europe Research and Innovation Action (RIA) running from September 2026 to August 2029. It brings together 13 beneficiaries to build an open-source, vendor-neutral quantum runtime stack. By extending Eclipse Qrisp and embedding GAIA-X compliant data space connectors, Q-VERSE guarantees platform flexibility, security, and seamless hybrid HPC-QPU execution.
Q-VERSE System Architecture
Key Objectives
SO-1 | Hardware-Agnostic Stack
Extend the Eclipse Qrisp framework with low-level abstraction plugins to support gate-based, annealing, and simulated backends without code rewriting.
SO-2 | Hybrid HPC-QPU Orchestration
Develop middleware capable of dynamic workload partitioning and sub-microsecond latency management between EuroHPC supercomputers and QPUs.
SO-3 | Sovereign Data Space Integration
Deploy GAIA-X compliant connectors to enforce strict access control, GDPR compliance, and transparent dataset traceability across the quantum pipeline.
SO-4 | Real-World Industrial Validation
Validate the stack across four industrial pilots in Railway, Finance, Pharma, and Telecommunications.
SO-5 | Open Governance & Developer Ecosystem
Establish vendor-neutral governance under the Eclipse Foundation, supported by open repositories, hackathons, and public tutorials.
SO-6 | European Standardization
Drive technical consensus and contribute directly to standards bodies, specifically CENELEC JTC22 WG3.
